Surviving the first week

Today is my tenth day of independant living. That's right, I've survived the first week! It was pretty easy to be honest but there are people here who have been missing home which of course, is to be expected. Now, I don't know if you're at university, thinking of going as a late starter or next year or if you know someone that has gone but I'm going to tell you about my first week as an attempt to put your mind at rest.
Day 1 - Moving in.
On moving day, my boyfriend, my mum and my mum's friend came to help but left fairly early since there wasn't much to do. I felt bad because I only had a few bits for my room and I wanted to place them myself and I didn't know the area so I wasn't sure what we could do. If you're going to uni maybe go out for dinner as a goodbye and a kind of closure.
This was the day I met Hann too and it's good to talk to people as much as possible to people you pass on moving day to make it easier when they live with you or so they recognise you if you're around. You'll be one of the first people they speak to so it's an easy way to make friends.
During moving in time, you're accomodation is most likely to be offering free food. Definitely, definitely go to get that because one, you get free food and two, other people living in the same place will be there hoping to find a friendly face. Parents, this means you don't have to worry about your kids not eating for a little while.

Day 2 - Finding Friends
So I didn't make any friends on the first night but night two, with a little push, I got myself out there and met some really nice people who were willing to let me tag along with them for a while. We ended up going round to the pub together and at the minute, we're still talking so that's cool. Remember, most people are in the exact same position as you.

Day 3 - Meeting B
I had met my flat mate on the second day but we only got names since I was on my way out and she was just moving her stuff in with her family. Nobody else was here on the third night (and there won't be until tomorrow) but it was really nice to get to know her on her own. Her family cooked me some tea too! If you get a chance to talk to each of your house mates individually then do, don't be shy! You may run out of things to say but you have a chance to really get to know them. I now have someone to go to freshers with and I got a photo of a squirrel.

Day 4 - A not Liverpudlian
Probably the most fun day was the fourth. One of the friends I made earlier had to move flats and ended up with a fairly nice flatmate. We went out again with the not liverpudlian this time and had a great night. Unfortunately it ended up with a fresh coat of vomit coloured paint on NL's bedroom walls. Advice - know your limits. Still a great, hilarious night, once you've made the first couple of friends, the rest become easier.

Day 5 - Food Shopping
Definitely go for a cheaper brand - you're a student, you need money for student things. I looooved food shopping, It was what I was most looking forward to and I found my closest Aldi earlier in the week which turned out to be pretty handy. One person I met, wanted to do their shopping too and didn't know where the Aldi was. Cue my recent knowledge. We went food shopping together and because I helped them find the shop, they helped me carry my hoards of food back. Got a duckling photo on the way...

Day 6 - Me Time
I pretty much just stayed in on this day and relaxed. Sometimes it's good to take some time to yourself just to clear your mind and if you get bored, just ask one of your new friends round.

Day 7 - Sorting Stuff Out
Last day of the week and I powered on through! It was good, easy and fun. Since I'd been here for a week I decided it was time to get some of the boring stuff done. I researched doctors and dentists etcetera and went to find out about prices and things. This is something you could get help with before getting to your new home or on moving day when you can get parents to help you if you feel like you want or need it.
Hope all of you guys have had a great week wherever you are and whatever you're doing, let me know how your first week of school, uni, college or new job has been if you've started something new! or if you can remember your first week how was that?
Happy days :)
